The band also participated in the Finnish Eurovision qualifiers with the song
Awake Again, the alternative metal messengers from Turku, Finland released their new single EVEN THE DEAD FISH CAN SWIM UPSTREAM today. The song channels pure energy in the form of a modern metal song. In addition to its breath-taking tempo and aggressiveness the song has catchiness that stays in your head for days.
The name of the song originates from the way some fish continue to swim after they die, due to their anatomy and the favorable current for the fish.
"I came across a video where there was a dead fish swimming upstream, and I immediately thought that what a perfect metaphor! I was in a situation in my own life where I thought hard about the direction of my life. Due to recent crises, such as the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine, I had started to think about how I would like to live, and not just to get through one day at a time. A dead fish swimming upstream seemed like a perfect metaphor at that moment. Even though a bit clichéd; just because you're constantly moving doesn't mean you're alive," says the band's vocalist Matti Österman and continues:
"Perhaps for the first time the song perfectly showcases how we want our music to sound. If someone asks what kind of music we make, the answer would be this song."
The song has already been performed at the band's concerts since last fall, and it has received an exceptionally positive reception. Last fall, the song was also sent to the Finnish Eurovision qualifiers, but it didn’t make it to the finals.
"It would have been wonderful to be able to perform the song live with big show elements! Fortunately, it's clear as day that the Finnish representative Käärijä will win in Liverpool in May," says drummer Petteri Horn.
The song was composed, written, recorded and produced by the band. Guitarist Kasper Hellström, who stopped playing live last year, also played a big role in the making of the song. The final result was perfected by Rami Nykänen who mixed and mastered the song. Nykänen has recently become one of the top names in the Finnish metal scene (e.g. One Morning Left).
The band has been streamed more than 5 million times on streaming services and has played a lot of shows. The most notable show being in Germany at the Wacken Open Air festival as part of the finals of the international Wacken Metal Battle band competition. In 2023, we can expect new music and many adrenaline-filled concerts from the band. The band’s 10th anniversary will be celebrated at their home turf in Turku's live music venue Utopia on May 19th.
